What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. It’s based on the premise that we all have an invisible ‘life force’, that at times becomes weak or unbalanced. Reiki translates into English as ‘spiritually guided life force energy’. The well-known form of Reiki is the Usui System of Natural Healing, which is named after its founder, Dr. Mikao Usui. He was born in Japan in 1865.

‘Ki’ is a Japanese term for the lifeforce that flows through all living things. There have been many names for this lifeforce in different cultures throughout history. In India it’s known as prana, in China, chi, in Ancient Egypt, ka, in Ancient Greece, pneuma, and in Polynesia, mana, along with many more names in other cultures throughout history.

When your ‘ki’ or energy level is high, you feel happy and confident and ready to face life’s challenges. Negative thoughts and emotions weaken the energy field and eventually express themselves in the physical body, contributing to feelings of depression, irritability, or anxiety. During a Reiki session, the energy field is charged up with positive energy, raising the vibratory level of the body and releasing blocks and negative energy.

I place my hands on the major energy centres or chakras in the body, or can have my hands slightly above the body. You may feel a sensation of radiant warmth and calm.

It is a safe, natural form of therapy that cannot harm.

Reiki, like yoga, is not a religion, but incorporates a guide to life. These are the 5 Reiki principles for living as espoused by the founder Dr. Mikao Usui.

If you wish, you can request for some Reiki to be incorporated into your massage session.
